By 2006, WindowPRO became one of Renewal by Andersen’s largest affiliates in Ohio. That was three years after Jake Zahnow exited an 80-year-old family business in wholesale distribution to focus solely on the retail home improvement business.

To be a successful leader in the industry, said Zahnow, you need to be engaged 24/7/365. “A 40-hour Monday through Friday work week does not apply to the home improvement business. If you want regular hours, this is the wrong industry to go into,” he said.

Zahnow credits his success to having a lot of optimism, a willingness to change and resiliency. As a business owner, you have to be optimistic about the future and always view challenges as opportunities, he added. Don’t waste time wringing your hands about the economy. Instead, find opportunities to succeed in this economy.

“No one wants to buy from or do business with a pessimist,” Zahnow said. “The glass is always half full here, by nature and not by necessity.”
